A non-scholar, I--admittedly--skim for the parts that fascinate me as an in-depth Nyingma practitioner. I wanted to mention that Jim Valby translated the Kunje' Gyalpo, in its entirely, in multiple self-published paperback volumes. Also, I have naive question. I know the extant menngagde tantras are clearly from a later date. But, I'm wondering if you have noticed any precursors, or hints, of their older roots in the Matho trove. Thank you.Yudron Wangmohttp://www.mayummountain.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32671574.post-221907730052272762023-12-28T10:42:35.238+02:002023-12-28T10:42:35.238+02:00Hello Malcolm, Nice to hear a word from you. That ...Hello Malcolm, Nice to hear a word from you. That idea that this particular chapter on relics was purposely inserted in the chorten is an intriguing one. An even earlier stûpa cache in Gilgit included more than one copy of the Adbhuta-dharma-paryāya, a sutra text that recommends the practice of making small stupas of clay (subject of Yael Bentor's masters thesis, where she suggested there might be a reason for enclosing this particular text inside a stupa). I may want to get into a more involved discussion of this another time since I think there are problems that ought to be worked out (for instance, what are the other 999 fragments doing there in Matho? Why do most of them have nothing to do with chortens?). And for your other point: Yes, a search in the Paltsek collection of Nyingma tantras (doable at THLib website) turns up 33 instances of "dpe don rtags" in 29 different tantras. A broadly based BUDA etext search yields 236. Try it and see what pops up, it may be surprising. Be well, and make the most of whatever the coming year will bring. We're all in it together. Perhaps the reason this chapter was included in the stupas in question is due to the fact that it concerns relics. Also dpe/don/rtags are frequently used in Buddhist Dzogchen texts. Happy new years. I must have had other things on my mind. Ngang-pa in Classical Tibetan most often makes me think of ducks, but not always, unless there is some indication of orangish color. Similar with ngang-pa when it means goose, perhaps its most likely meaning (?). But there, too, if whiteness is indicated then swan is what it is, no doubt. I'll go change duck to swan in the text and we'll put this problem behind us. Thank you for writing. It requires you to do one-page-at-a-time. The recognition was fair. But, it routinely left out lines on a page (trying to OCR a text in machine font, it would leave out one full line of text). My idea was to make a rough OCR a text I was wondering about, then quickly outline the sa-bcad. Good plan! i2ocr had a knack for leaving out the sa-bcad lines (gnyis pa ni...), which was a bit maddening.
